A Cinderella Story, Furniture Rehab Style – Tutorial

final front

Here is a story of a great thrift store transformation! We found this “Cinderella story”,  ragged and worn piece while thrifting one morning together. This piece had different lines and style than we are normally drawn to, but we thought it would be fun to try something different and use a cool technique to spruce her up a bit. We love the results and hope you will too. Here is the step by step transformation. Just call us her furniture fairy godmothers. 🙂

We sanded just the edges of all surfaces of the piece and a few random spots on the top and doors to soak up darker stain.

We applied one coat of ASP Duck Egg to this piece, leaving the sanded parts either partially or fully bare.

Using a home made mix of Ash and Dark Walnut Stain, we used a sponge brush to apply dark stain to the sanded areas of the piece. Let the stain soak in for a moment before wiping off and proceeding to the next step. Don’t worry if the stain drips onto the painted parts, it will look great after the next step.

We used a lint free cloth and Briwax to cover the entire piece with a aging effect.

Here is a coat of wax going on over the stain. The wax and stain will mix and create a layered aged look, don't worry that some areas will look darker or lighter than others. That is just what we were looking to accomplish with this technique.

You don’t need to wait before moving onto the next step. Using the same stain as before, we sponge brushed over the entire piece (one section at a time)  in long even strokes and quickly used a lint free cloth to wipe off excess stain (again wiping in long, even strokes with the grain of the wood).

Another view after the top coat of stain has been applied and wiped off. Don't wait too long to wipe off the stain or it will look patchy.

Once the stain and wax fully dry, which takes approximately 24 hours, apply  a coat of Annie Sloan Clear Wax to seal it.

And now, may we present, Cinderella, all dressed up for the ball. We love the dynamic feel of the color.

This was a really fun project that allowed us to step out from our normal furniture makeovers and go for a different look. We hope you like it and try something new in your home!
